PARANOID
SCHIZOPHRENIA:
Schizophrenia
is a Greek word meaning 'split mind'.
(I wonder what the English word is?)
Seems we borrow words from all over the world, but
have none of our own in English!
So, it is as I
thought it would be...there are very few Government Health
websites covering this subject. I have a nephew who
has suffered with paranoid schizophrenia for the
last 25 years. He is 43-years old. Has not lived his
life as most people do, have girl friends, go out
with the lads to a pub, club, whatever, never got
married and has never fathered a child. In fact, he
has lived a nightmare the whole time instead.
Another subject the Government Health Authority does
not cover too well, is the matter of withdrawing local
Mental Health Institutions, such as psychiatric
hospitals once used as assessment centres and
stop-overs for treatment assessment in order to
get the right balance of medication (before)
sufferers are let out into society. Because of this
withdrawal of resources, many sufferers are governed
only by support teams often with GPs who know
virtually nothing about their patients who suffer
with paranoid schizophrenia, who are sent out onto
the streets where many commit suicide and some
commit murder.
The system is failing
my sister and many other people like her. She tends to her son because there are no more
resources to take the strain off her, she has
effectively lost 25 years of her life as a carer and
hardly, if ever, gets a break. Doctors sometimes refuse to believe her when she tells them her son is
getting worse, or needs an increase in certain
medication, just because her son tells the doctor
he's fine and takes his medication as prescribed and
when, which he sometimes lies about. Many paranoid
schizophrenics actually believe there is nothing
wrong with them and secretly do not take their
medication, and this is when it all goes horribly
wrong for the sufferer and their family!
In Norwich, Norfolk,
there are no resources left to my sister where she
may have
been able to send her son to for a few weeks so she
could enjoy a break from her son. The stress and
strain his condition causes, is tremendous on both of
them, though she loves him dearly, very dearly, and
because she cannot get a break is stuck with him
24/7 even though he has his own flat, which he
spends a lot of time in, but from time to time stays
the odd day with his mum. And when he is in his
flat, she worries so much about him, she often goes
there to keep an eye on him causing more stress. He finds it
impossible at times to live alone, and seeks the
comfort of companionship with his mother at her
home, and the nightmare continues for them both
whether he is in his flat or at his mum's home for
the day.
Our mutual "other"
sister who lives not far from her, has six children
and thought more about that fact than sparing her
sister just a few minutes to listen to her, and
complained bitterly that her problems were far worse
than having one son with a simple illness! What lack
of compassion and understanding; she must have a
heart of stone! Who
cares? No one cares, and there is virtually very
little help from local and central government. It
may interest the ignorant public to know that such sufferers
of paranoid schizophrenia are potentially suicidal
and dangerously close to committing murder when left
to their own devices out on the streets, but the
government don't care...it's your problem
not theirs they would tell you if the truth came out! Especially the problem of those who have
a child who has gone out and committed either
suicide or murder, their loved ones were most
certainly let down by the authorities, as too were
the victims families. My nephew complains bitterly
that everyone is conspiring against him. I think the
Government are conspiring against paranoid
schizophrenic sufferers and their carers and family
by deliberately cutting off local services to save
money and don't care whether such sufferers go out
and commit suicide or murder, at all!
